The Pittsburgh Pirates gave Paul Maholm seven runs of support in three innings against the New York Mets earlier this month before the left-hander unraveled in his team's shocking collapse.
These days, the Pirates barely seem capable of scoring that many runs in a week.
Pittsburgh has totaled four runs in its last four games as injuries continue to mount, meaning Maholm may need to be on top of his game Monday night if his team hopes to keep the Mets from taking three of four at PNC Park.
Maholm (2-7, 3.39 ERA) got 13 total runs of support in his first 10 starts before a 10-0 win in Chicago on May 28, and that offensive assistance carried over to his June 2 outing at Citi Field.
Despite being staked to a 7-0 lead over the Mets, Maholm couldn't finish the job. He exited with two outs in the sixth and was charged with seven runs in a game the Pirates (31-33) went on to lose 9-8.
"They spot me seven and I give it up," Maholm said. "It's not something that should happen and hopefully it won't happen again. They got off to a great start and I screwed it up."
