Even with a sudden change on their coaching staff, the Cleveland Indians still remain the majors' only unbeaten team in interleague play.
With Bruce Fields now instructing the team's hitters, the Indians will try to continue that success during Monday night's opener of a home series against the Colorado Rockies.
Despite showing improvement following a 6-16 stretch, the Indians replaced Jon Nunnally with Fields before Sunday's home game against Pittsburgh.
"We've been scuffling for a while and I felt like we need a new voice," manager Manny Acta said. "Jon worked hard and I want to thank him, but we are confident Bruce, who is very familiar with our current players, will continue the work he has done developing hitters at every level."
Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo said he was among those caught off-guard by the move.
"We're still in first place," said Choo, a career .290 hitter who's batting .244 this season. "Why is he fired? I am very disappointed because he helped me a lot. Not just me, everybody on the team.'"
