St Louis Cardinals vs San Diego Padres
10:05 PM ET, May 23, 2011
Petco Park, San Diego, California
Runs have been extremely hard to come by lately for the San Diego Padres. In fact, they've scored three fewer runs in the last six games than St. Louis plated its last time out, and the Cardinals didn't even reach double digits.
In the midst of one of their worst offensive stretches in nearly two decades, the host Padres could again have trouble against the suddenly dominant Kyle Lohse in Monday night's series opener.
San Diego (19-28) scored two runs in being swept by Seattle in a three-game series over the weekend, and has totaled six runs while losing five of six. That's the fewest runs the Padres have scored over a six-game stretch since July 22-28, 1992, when they also managed six.
Before the current dry spell, San Diego had scored 51 times in its previous six games while hitting .336.
"We have to play better baseball, there's no doubt," manager Bud Black said after Sunday's 6-1 loss. "We have seen spurts of good play, solid play. But so far, we have made too many little mistakes that have compounded and hurt us."
