The San Francisco Giants are last in the NL in runs and believe they have been facing some tough starters recently.
That appears to be the case again Monday when they take on Kyle McClellan and the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game set at Busch Stadium.
San Francisco (28-24) has totaled 14 runs in losing five of six in a stretch that included Wednesday's season-ending injury to catcher Buster Posey. The Giants' 177 runs rank ahead of only Minnesota's 175 in the majors.
"We're banged up, we know it, we're not making excuses. We've got to go out there and play our best ball to beat these teams. We're not doing it," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Offensively, we're not quite clicking."
Numerous hitters are slumping. Aubrey Huff is 5 for 25 in the last six games, Andres Torres is 4 for 20, Cody Ross is 2 for 17 and Miguel Tejada 2 for 18.
The Giants managed six singles in Sunday's 6-0 loss at Milwaukee in which Yovani Gallardo dominated them for eight innings.
