The Washington Nationals find themselves in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season. A three-game set with the light-hitting San Diego Padres could help them regroup.
After a rough road trip, the Nationals return home looking to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat as the last-place teams meet Friday night.
Washington (21-28) is coming off a three-game sweep by Milwaukee, losing 6-4 on Wednesday for its fifth defeat in a row that finished off a 1-7 trip.
Washington beat Baltimore 17-5 last Friday for its only win during the road swing, but totaled 17 runs in the seven losses. The Nationals haven't been any better at preventing opponents from scoring recently, posting a 7.20 ERA and giving up 34 runs during their losing streak.
"It was a terrible road trip. We were 1-7. That's a bad road trip," manager Jim Riggleman said. "I don't think there's one specific thing. I think we've just got to find a way to put it all together; the offense, the pitching together more often on the same day. ... We've had parts, but not too often lately on the same day."
