Minute Maid Park, Houston, Texas
The Arizona Diamondbacks averaged nearly 95 losses while finishing at the bottom of the NL West each of the last two years. Their recent play, though, may have them thinking about first place this season.
The streaking Diamondbacks go for their 10th win in 11 games Friday night in the opener of a three-game series with the last-place Houston Astros, who are in the midst of a brief surge.
Arizona had won six in a row at home, including sweeps of Atlanta and Minnesota, before hitting the road for seven games. After dropping the opener of a doubleheader against Colorado on Tuesday, the Diamondbacks took the next three games capped by a 6-3 victory Thursday.
Miguel Montero and Kelly Johnson homered for Arizona (26-24), which trails slumping San Francisco by 1 1/2 games in the West.
"Early in the year we were hitting, but we weren't pitching. Then we were pitching, but we weren't hitting and we were fumbling around and making mistakes on the bases," manager Kirk Gibson said. "We are putting things together."
