The New Jersey Devils knew their playoff push was unlikely given how far they had fallen out of contention. It's gotten a lot tougher now that they have suffered back-to-back losses for the first time in over two months.
The Devils look to get back on track when they begin a four-game road trip Sunday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
New Jersey (33-34-4) was at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with 22 points after a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia on Jan. 8 marked the end of a four-game skid. The Devils have been the best team in the NHL since with a league-high 48 points, although their pursuit of a playoff spot has stalled with a 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Thursday and a 3-0 loss to Washington on Friday.
New Jersey, which is in 12th place in the East, outshot the Senators 34-25 and the Capitals 33-12.
"We knew it was not going to be easy," goalie Martin Brodeur said. "This is the adversity we are facing right now and we need to get back on track. We have to do it quickly because we don't have much time left."
Ilya Kovalchuk has been one of the catalysts to the surge with 16 goals and 14 assists since Jan. 9. He's been held without a point in the consecutive losses, however.
